The 1st June is “International Parents Day” which got me thinking about our responsibilities as parents to set our little ones up for a lifetime of well-being and good habits. In a time where staring at screens and the convenience of fast food is irresistible, instilling healthy, active habits in our children is more important than ever. Here are a few ways to try and lead by example (when you can!) to ensure our kids grow up valuing their health and well-being.

Make activities fun

Exercise shouldn’t be a chore for anyone, but especially not for children! Whether it’s riding bikes, playing football, walking, or just having a dance around your living room, the goal is to make exercise something they can look forward to. Family activities such as playing games and going on hikes can be a great way to bond whilst also being active.

Cook and eat together

Healthy eating habits are foundational to overall well-being. Getting your children involved in making meals can teach them about the nutritional value of different foods and the importance of a balanced diet. As well as being fun and educational for your kids, it also encourages them to try new foods if they’ve prepared it themselves!

Lead by example

Children learn so much by observing their parents. If they see you prioritising health and well-being, they are likely to do the same. By making your daily routine include being active, eating healthy balanced meals and taking time for yourself to relax and de-stress you can set a good example. If kids see these behaviours as a normal part of life, they are more likely to adopt them.

Address mental health

Physical health is intertwined with mental well-being. By teaching your children coping mechanisms for stress, such as mindfulness, meditation or journaling, you will be setting them up to be adults who can better cope with hard situations. Open communication about feelings and emotions is essential in developing happiness and mental resilience.

Team sports

Social interactions play a significant role in mental and physical health. Encourage your children to participate in team sports or group activities, where they can develop friendships as well as learning the value of teamwork and cooperation.

Get the grandparents involved

Spending time with their grandchildren offers huge benefits for grandparents, especially in terms of mental health and well-being. Younger family members can provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment and help prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation in the older community. Ultimately, as well as keeping the older generation active and happy, these relationships help create precious moments and memories for both grandchildren and grandparents which will enhance their lives.

Final Thoughts

As two new parents, Beth and Lucy (the owners here at BLYNC LDN) want to help you to get active with your children. By designing a range of long lasting, flexible activewear we’re making it as easy as possible to try and keep up with your little ones! Passing on healthy, active habits to your children is one of the most valuable gifts you can give them. It equips them with the tools they need to lead fulfilling, energetic lives. From leading by example, making health a fun family affair and creating a positive environment, you will help them do just that!
